Apart from its principal use as a binder in asphalt mixing, bitumen has various other applications such as roofing, anti-slip layer in piling industry, electric cable joint protection etc. These applications require certain hardness of bitumen, which can be attained by the oxidization of bitumen at elevated temperatures. Oxidizing bitumen enhances its rubbery properties, eventually making it harder and eligible for the applications mentioned above.
